Ascent Trip ReportToday wore me out. Had a 5.5 mile round trip hike to summit Mt. Cannon planned today. We took High Cannon Trail up (an alternate for the Terrifying 25!) And had planned on returning the same way if the weather allowed. We found the cache at the summit and had lunch on the observation tower even though the entire summit was completely fogged in. Checked out the cafeteria and trams, then decided to go after the geocache on the East peak near the Old Man in the Mountain's original location. We couldn't find the cache, then decided to simply continue down the Kinsmen trail. Holy hell... that was a rock scramble almost straight down the mountain. I took 2 minor spills, (the second one tour up my thumb & shin pretty good (yay first aid kit! )) and had a very rough time negotiating the trail. I seriously almost cried once we hit mostly level dirt trail before arriving at the parking lot that we weren't parked in. We knew changing our course would tack on an extra 2 miles along the multi-use trail, but there was a threat of thunderstorms (which was made good! ) and we decided that descending the High Cannon Trail in the rain was NOT a good idea. Instead of 5.5 miles, we ended up with 9 miles in 8 hours.
