Ascent Trip Report

I first tried approaching from the W since I came from Haley. Several roads coming from this direction go up towards the ridge and significantly shorter the ascent but all looked to pass through private property. So I had to drive from the "town" of Bodie all the way around S to near Republic. From here I followed Craig's directions on Summitpost. No issues with the directions although it should be noted that mileages are segmented rather than cumulative (not apparent as they ascend at first). The first 5 miles or so traverses private property but it's all legal on the road and no issues. All public. From there you just continue on, usually turning left. The road becomes a bit rougher further in as you round the W side of Hardscrabble Mtn. But no issues getting a car to the summit road turnoff. I agree with Craig, while a car could conceivably power up this road you really want high clearance due to the sloping and eroded road. No need for 4WD but I'd want at least an Outback. Never had any concerns my 4Runner wouldn't make it. Parked at a grassy bit before the very final push. Summit rock is on the NW corner of comm building with a silver peg in it. Grave marker and jacket laid out in the sun for a fellow who passed in 2015 and had his ashes scattered on top. Wide sweeping views. Uneventful exit via the approach route.
