Ascent Trip ReportMy 4th time up this massive beautiful state HP. This time I tried the Abol Trail which was newly opened and they are still working on it. They have created a wide path that switchbacks through the conifers and Krummholtz without going up the large slide. It is the easiest way up now. It starts higher up than Katahdin Steam/Hunt and is an easy parking area to access. We forgot our passes this time and the other two approaches had permitted people ahead of us to only this route was accessible for us at 6AM on WED!
fortunately, it was a sunny nice day of 57F but the wind was obnoxious. It beat us up all day and by the time we made the second peak (Baxter South) we vetoed doing the knife edge. The winds were so intense on the ridge they blew us to our feet and we had to sit at least 5 to 7 times. I have not felt wind gusts that strong since Boreas and Rainier. Not a pleasant exposed scramble in places when you go to place a foot and you body gets blown in another direction so we called it a day with simply getting Baxter Peak and Baxter South.
I would say the views from this new trail are excellent. many large 180 panoramas. This is the shorter less intense way up but still a hard earned day. I have now done all approaches other than from the north over Howe Peak. Someday.....
