Ascent Trip ReportDespite being on the island with regular boatloads of tourists, it has a remote vibe. The trail up is 1.1 miles one way. It starts over rough lava blocks (which were ejected after the cinder cone) and continues with a couple switchbacks through moderate forest on a well-maintained trail. The lake and rim are in almost constant view, and the views from the top where the trees thin out (or are photogenically dead) are unparalleled. The walk around the almost perfectly circular rim was the highlight. Not only are the views great but there is interesting geologic variety on the rim alone. You can walk down into the crater - we didn't since there's nothing interesting to see.
Most everyone on our boat lunched at the top. We went back down and hiked towards Fumerole Bay. It's a further hike than we expected so we scrambled to a private spot overlooking the water and ate there.
One would be hard-pressed to do both trails in 3 hours and include any kind of meal or downtime. You can stay as long as you like but aren't guaranteed space back on a boat if it's full.
We had the 2 hour boat tour afterwards as well. We felt it was worth the $25 for seeing waterfalls inside the crater, up close with formations like the Phantom Ship, drinking straight from the lake, and we even saw the Old Man of the Lake!
2/1 ACCESS - an extra point for the amazing boat ride! pro-tip: if you don't reserve ahead online, there is a digital kiosk in Mazama village you can buy tickets from
1/2 REMOTENESS (Popularity, Sight/Sound) - continuous stream of people to the island, but you feel a sense of island isolation, and the numbers are limited
1/1 CONDITION - trail highway
3/3 VARIETY (Flora and Fauna, Geological, Terrain) - variety of volcanic geology (especially on the rim loop), forest, wildfires, water bays, etc.
3/3 VIEWS - could you rate anything in Crater Lake anything less?!
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
