Ascent Trip ReportA bit of a desecration I know... but this report is of my drive up Mount Evans. Having climbed Mount Elbert the day previous, bagging this 14er was irresistible, regardless of the method. I would liked to have hiked up from Summit Lake, or to have included the neighboring 14er, which looked less than a 1/2 mile away and a few hundred feet of additional gain. But, I had to have the rental turned in at the airport within a few hours.
From I-70 it took about 90 min to drive to the summit, about half of that time getting to the entrance of the park. I parked a couple of hundred yards from the parking lot at about 13950 feet elevation. The views to the west were spectacular, though to the east, it was hazy, so I couldn't really see the city. Due to the fantastic accessibility, there were about a hundred other folks, of all ages and fitness levels on the summit.
I planned to bag the Denver City High Point on the way to the airport. A woman at the gift store suggested I take Colorado Highway 103 to the right, rather than back to the I-70. I made my way through Evergreen and onto US285, which dumped me into Denver at the very southern edge, where the Denver High was. |
