Ascent Trip Report

As of this date, you can get a same day approval to gain access to Mt. Grant !!! We were the third party on register for 2016 on a summit where few people go. Here are some important things to know as we found.1) permits are issued to get a gate key from the Base ID office(place that processes car stickers, etc. 2) it may be hard to reach them by phone, however the nice lady handling it is experienced and does return calls. It took several days to reach the office.(it may be she is only personnel authorized to process the brief application). 3) firearms, alcohol, stove fuel, etc are not authorized on the base property.(we fudged on this with fuel cannisters and a few beers in the cooler)knowing we would only be there for a brief stay and wouldn't use them on the base. 4) the application was one sheet covering liability - travel at your own risk - and the aforementioned illegal items. 5) the key has to be returned by 6pm daily. My sense is that there is only one key per day given out but this could be wrong. Again, few people go up there. 6) the 19 mile road is good hardpack gravel. The last and open miles to summit are airy and should be done with caution. WE liked the odds of a good traction AWD Ford Escape. 7) many wildflowers were blooming and recognized. 8) We encountered two sets of 6 and 3 mountain goats within 1/2 mile of gate coming down to water. These goats are not the beefy, non engaging type. . . they were svelt, darker, and curious of us. . . they see few people up there. . . and stayed within 30 yards of car. A nice gift on a beautiful day and drive up on high ! views to vanishing Lake Walker and Sierras awesome.
