Ascent Trip Report

Monument Peak 10,452 ft, Carbon County Highpoint.

Drove down to Fairview, then headed East up the canyon to Electric Lake, and turned North on SR-264. At the apex of the highway, turned South onto Skyline Drive (graded dirt road) until within quarter mile of the Carbon County Highpoint. Parked in an open area near the start of the rougher 4x4 road which turned back North and led directly to Monument Peak. It was raining hard and the jeep trail was very muddy, slick, with a layer of marble sized hail lining the ruts. So, I elected to just walk off the last quarter mile to the highpoint, all the while, hoping I wouldn't start hearing and thunder. Got to the top, quickly filmed a 360 degree video and shot some photos. Then quickly made my way back to my truck to dry-off.
Headed off to Huntington Reservoir to camp for the night, hoping to tag East Mountain the next day. However, in the morning and with the heavy rain the previous evening, once I drove past Indian Creek Campground, the road turned into a deep, slippery, rutty, muddy mess still about 3 miles from the trailhead. I was really tired and didn't feel like trudging through the mud nor trying to climb a steep muddy hillside, if going direct to the ridge above. So, I called it.. and decided to just come back when the roads were dried out. At least I got one highpoint for the weekend. Thanks for reading.
