Ascent Trip ReportStarted out at Woodland Valley parking area around 8:30 a.m. (paid summer day-use fee). It was around 60 degrees, not too hot or humid. There is no gradual start to this trail; it's steep right off the bat. You don't even get to the trail register box until about a third of a mile up, and I was huffing and puffing. But I knew a portion of the hike would be fairly level, so that helped me stay positive.
After the steep start, it's a nice forest walk for quite a bit. Fairly level and you even lose elevation in some spots. This forest walk portion isn't terribly rocky, which was nice, because the rest of the trail was VERY rocky and challenging. It took longer than I'd think to get to the trail junction, and the 1.3 miles from that point was a tough climb. Lots of interesting boulders and scrambles to navigate and scale, although no exposed faces, and a relentlessly steep grade to the summit. Once there, though, it all became worthwhile.
I did lose the trail briefly toward the top, at a point where you have to turn right around a boulder, and instead took a spur to the left that led to an illegal campsite and then a narrow ledge around an exposed face. Someone had been using a crack in that ledge as a bathroom, and flies were everywhere. I started crossing the ledge, hugging the rock, and realized I had to be off-trail and retraced. I also found this juncture tricky to follow on the way down. But all in all, very well-blazed and a great hike. Got back to the car at 2:30 p.m.
