Ascent Trip Report

The trailhead is located on Forest Service Road 4220 about 2 miles north of Olallie Lake. You park under the southernmost of three transmission lines and cross the road to the beginning of an older road. After just a few steps onto that road, you look for the trail going off to the right. It's a narrow, stony trail at first, and in about 200 yards it intersects the Pacific Crest Trail. Go straight across and keep going. The lower half of the trail is rough going, gullied out in places and with many dead-fall trees. A couple of strong lads with bow saws and a couple of free days could do a great service here. Anyway, it's a very nice hike, and the trail gets better the higher you go. I had to skirt quite a few ice-hard snow drifts higher up, but they weren't a significant problem. The switchbacks near the top were very pleasurable to hike. There was a strong, cold wind at the summit, but the views were worth it. I was planning to drop down to the saddle on the north and then descend the northeast flank of the butte to find the Wasco county high point; but the big drifts on the east side of the saddle made me decide not to. From the saddle, it was an easy downhill walk to one of the switchbacks, cutting off about half a mile from the descent.
