Ascent Trip ReportWe were staying in burns on our way down to Nevada and Utah. We were going to drive right past the steens mountain loop road. This was perfect since we have wanted to do this for awhile. The steens loop road to the top was open and clear as of last week. At the 3 way junction on the loop road, take the middle road to the top (it's fairly obvious as it just leads to the top of the cell towers). We had a 4wd suburban and we're unwilling to drive the last 1/2 mile to the summit. Its steep and rugged. Plus it's kinda lame to just drive to the top of steens peak in all its significance! There is a sign that says steens summit road and places to park. Its an easy 1/2 mile hike up the road to the top. Great views of the flats and surrounding areas. |
