Ascent Trip Report

I climbed Big Baldy right after climbing Long Mountain, as other people seem to have done. From my trailhead for Long Mountain, I drove back up road 3328 to the tip of a sharp turn on the crest of the ridge separating the the two upper forks of Chamberlain Creek. An old logging road bisects the road at this point.

I headed up the old road toward the west ridge of Big Baldy as it went over some gently undulating terrain. Eventually, as shown on the topo map, this road split. I took a right, went uphill, and soon reached a clearcut where other faint roads branched off confusingly in every direction. From here I bushwhacked straight up the ridge toward trail 733, going up a section of shifty class 2 talus en route.

Once on trail 733 I followed it straight to the top. I did not encounter any ORV people on trail 733 nor any who had come up from Tepee Butte. This summit affords nicely wide-ranging views on a clear day. I could see all the way to the Beartooths and Tobacco Roots to the south and to the Little Rockies and Bear Paws to the north.
