Ascent Trip ReportThis trip sucked! No other way to say it. I got smart and wanted to make it a hike and not walk up the power easement as others had. Soooooo, I parked at the public park called Kemper Park which is a nicely mowed grassy field. My plan was to simply head due east through the public preserve lands to the power easement near the HP and slip in the back and tag it!
Once you get to the east side of Kemper Park there is tall weeds with briers. I negotiated through the openings and then found the woods of the Helm Woods Forest Preserve (HWFP) looking a bit daunting so I followed deer herd trails onto temporarily private land fields and got ripped by briers. I then followed a deer trail back into the HWFP and found some nice understory that had few briers and headed due east and bushwhacked my way into the easement under the power lines and easily found the well manicured HP. Tagged it and got decided to be even smarter. Not wanting to go back on that private brier field, I thought I could follow a new deer track through some open woods SW back.
A great plan until the deer trails started to meander in every direction and the woods got thick and the briers got huge!
Finally, i was totally turned around and lost in a thick brier patch getting ripped to shreds. I ended up along a subdivision far off course and to the south. I did not want to trespass my way of hell so I continued to gut it out in the briers. For an hour or more! Finally made it back to Kemper on the south side finding a nice mowed path back to the open field and my car.
I do NOT recommend this track.
