Ascent Trip Report

Stopped in and found the geology interesting. I parked at the Visitor Center and then hiked down to the small lake at the bottom (or as close as I could simulate by the low point in the exit road) and made that my TH. Signs said do not hike down to the lake so I obeyed. Then I hiked back up to the Center and took the main trail south and west through the shagbark hickory and bur oak forest and found the ridge-line up and over the Camelback Kame. Pretty impressive gravel deposits now heavily overgrown with wildflowers and grasses but the literature explains the forces of retreating glaciation well. Nice views for a place in IL!

Lot of meandering trails through the kettles and kames so you get some good gain in and out of this short day hike.
