Ascent Trip Report

Parked at Johnsberg Wilmont Road in small turn off near nice entrance sign. Hiked in and down mowed trails through grass lands into surprisingly steep and heavily wooded lands with huge diameter trees. Way to go Illinois! I found many such forest preserves to hike in all over the area. Very impressed at the state's mindset to preserving the remaining woodlands. I saw huge bur oak, some white oak, some pin oak, and cedar, shagbark hickory.

The ATV trail on the USGA map acutally goes nearly all the way to the Fox River so with a little bushwhack I had my starting TH the river elevation. Then hiked back up to the HP which is a county BM with an easy to find monument at the top. Some of the hilly glacial carved terrain was so steep that my boots did not hold on the trails and I had to either slide walk or run down them as there was no traction. Very cool area and not what I expected in IL.
