Ascent Trip ReportWell, I didn't think I was that much of a purist, but I can't claim the Vatican City High Point with a clear conscience when I was, at least, .2 miles away and dozens of feet lower, although by climbing to the top of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, I was probably more than one hundred feet above the highest natural point, but of course, I was on a man-made structure. The problem is that the natural highest point is in the Vatican Gardens and I did not do enough homework to obtain the tickets for a garden tour. Even then, it is not guaranteed that you will reach the highest point. It is just "luck of the draw" if your tour guide will take you near the actual high point and then allow you to take a victory photo or even get close enough to tag it. After reading all the trip reports here, it seems many individuals never got close to the high point or even entered the gardens. Everyone has their own standards as to what constitutes a "legal ascent," so it is not my place to criticize others, but for myself, as I have already mentioned, I cannot claim this high point with a clear conscience when I was so far away, even though I did climb to the top of the Basilica. Good luck if you attempt this high point, but make sure you get a ticket for the Garden Tour or you will definitely not have a chance at getting any closer than I did. Another thing to consider is that the Garden Tours probably are not offered everyday. When I was at the top of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, I had a great view of the entire gardens and I did not see a single person in the entire area. If I ever return, I will definitely have a Garden Tour ticket in hand and hope to charm my tour guide into allowing me to reach the highest spot.
