Ascent Trip Report

Arrowhead Peak is known as the worst bushwhack peak on the LPS (or LPC) list, when approaching the peak from the north. However, we found a route on the south side that was 99% brush-free!

Driving north on Hwy 18 out of San Bernardino, turn right onto a side road entering Waterman Canyon and go 0.65 mi to a turn-out on the right (east) side of the road. On topo maps, BM 2012 is located here. From this parking spot, we briefly walked north up the road, crossing a narrow bridge. On the N side of the bridge, we took a use trail skirting a small creek for a few hundred feet, then left it heading east towards the SW ridge of the peak. There was no signage or fences to suggest hiking here is not allowed. A sign back on Hwy 18 indicated we had entered the San Bernardino National Forest. There was one 'No Trespassing' sign on a pole for a transmission line that we passed under, but it appeared intended to discourage people from vandalizing the poles.

Once on the ridge with a total gain of 400 feet thus far, we followed the ridge north to the peak. Occasionally a section of trail would appear that may have been a more extensive firebreak at one time. At the summit area, the notorious dense brush finally appeared. We circled clockwise around the brush guarding the summit until reaching the SE side where a use trail had been hacked through the brush all the way to the top. Except for the brush on the summit, the entire route was grasslands with occasional patchy bushy sections.

Total gain: 2200 ft (2150 ft outbound, 50 ft of gain on return); Total hike distance: 2.8 miles.
