Ascent Trip ReportStarted from Refugio de Linza, outside of Izaba Spain, at which we (son James and I) stayed the night before. The Refugio was quite comfortable and accommodating. The facility has a capacity of several dozen, but being there during the week, we were only among a few other folks. One of the other parties was a one week guided tour out of Lourdes France.
We took followed the usual trail listed on SP. Because of a snowy winter and a cold spring, there was still a fair amount of snow on the trail. At about 2/3 into the hike, one trail went into a snow field, and two came out. Much like I do in the grocery store check out line, I chose the wrong trail. The trail I took led toward Petrichemi, and necessitated crossing an extra ridge and extra rock climbing. The view at the top was incredible. At this point, we were on the French/Spanish border, and the border of two Spanish regions, Navarra and Aragon. We could see grand peaks all around.
One the descent, had the same difficulty with route finding due to large snow fields, and again we were rewarded by having to climb a couple of extra ridges and some Class II+ spots.
What was billed as a 6 hour round trip ended up taking about 10.
