Ascent Trip Report

Driving directions:

Take Exit 340 from I-84 signed "Rye Valley".

0.0 TURN WEST towards Rye Valley on Dixie Creek Road.
0.3 The road turns to gravel.
8.4 TURN LEFT onto Mormon Basin Road.
11.5 CONTINUE STRAIGHT on Mormon Basin Road (Durbin Creek Road is on your left).
13.3 PARK next to the South Fork Dixie Creek on your left.

There were no fences in view at this spot. Several vehicles passed by while I was parked and standing beside my vehicle before and after my hike and the drivers were cordial.

I attempted to follow the route described by George Burgess in his ascent of 2012-09-14. I climbed the steep slope on the north side of there road, crossed a fence higher, then traversed left to gain a primitive road leading north.

I followed this road north, passed a road leading left, then came to another road junction at about 5000 feet where a gate was visible further up the left fork. I decided to follow the right fork. This road eventually led me too far east and I had to side traverse slopes through brush to get back on route following the south ridge as it led to the summit.

I tried to stay closer along the south ridge on my descent. This required that I cross an unexpected fence below and west of Point 5894. I picked up the expected primitive road below and east of Point 5580. I followed this road down, then squeezed through a locked gate which had "No Trespassing" signs facing down the road. I descended the road further, passed through an open gate, and rejoined my ascent route at the fork where I had mistakenly turned right on my ascent.

I noted another open gate just to the east of the locked gate I had squeezed through. Perhaps by taking that gate one could avoid all "No Trespassing" signs on this route.
