Ascent Trip ReportI thought the drive to the trailhead at Columbine was going to be easy, and during most of the year it probably is. I was coming in late at night having come up from Tonopah via a forest service road that connects to 21. After turning off the paved road toward the campground on NF-119, I was immediately caught off guard by a very full wash 10-15' across. However, in the dark I didn't see it and how deep it was until I was committed. My Subaru plowed through it, but it was deeper and more swiftly than I was comfortable with. The other stream crossing further up the road was trivial in comparison. This crossing I encountered was described as a dry riverbed in other trip reports, and I imagine that it is insignificant during most of the year. However, the recent heat and rapidly melting snow pack can apparently make for an additional obstacle in late spring.
Columbine campground is easily one of the best in Nevada. Lots of snow up in the Toyiabe crest making for difficult travel as I regularly post-holed to knee depth.
