Ascent Trip Report

Road conditions and where to park were the only concerns I had going in to Star Peak. It turns out that descriptions on summitpost of the road coming out of El Dorado canyon are exaggerated or the road has notably improved. The road is rut free and largely free of big rocks. The only challenge (when dry) is that it is steep, and the steepness ultimately determined where I stopped. Others describe a parking stop around 6500'. It's not very difficult to get that high and there is plenty of parking on what is actually an abandoned side road branching off a turn in the main road.

I continued on up the arm to where the road flattens out for a bit around 7100' and parked right before it drops down briefly. There is a campfire ring suggesting that this is a common place to park. The road does get steeper after 6500', but it is manageable without 4x4. I would have quickly run into problems going any further than I did as the road gets much steeper and sustains that steepness.

The hike up the road was straightforward, and I ran into a herd of deer in the saddle between the north and main summit.
