Ascent Trip ReportHiked in the summerland trail to summerland campground. Plenty of snow for this time of year. After a quick lunch break at summerland we shot straight up for meany crest. The larger dome like peak on the right turned out to be the campsite we were shooting for (around 7200'). Set up camp on bare ground. 2:30am Alpine start with uneventful crossings of Fryingpan glacier, Whitman Crest and Whitman Glacier. Several other parties were on the route, but a more direct route helped get ahead of the rest.
Climbed as high as possible on whitman, scrambled the rocky notch in crampons and climbed the final snowfield to get to the summit scramble. Lots of loose and unstable rock. The summit block was crowded, but our whole party managed to tag the true summit. A short (30') handline was required. Some 5.easy reverse leading to clean the gear placed by our leader. Hot on the way down. A dislodged block of snow narrowly missed our party while crossing steeper sections of the whitman. |
