Ascent Trip Report
After visiting Buckhorn Knob we picked up another of M Schwartz' TR and headed for this COHP. Few things have changed on the ground so this TR attempts to update/add detail. This is not a stand-alone report, one must read Michael. I offer my comments in point form.
1) At Windmill Gap (8.5 miles) the general store is no longer and the "........ paved side road north from the gap." is signed "Prosperity School Road 13/1".
2) "...... and go left on gravel road 10.2 miles". A very tall blue water tank sits at this corner and a large sign "Hill Top Escape" points the way.
3) The permanently open gate at 10.7 miles is no longer there. We parked at the yellow house.
4)The Curtis Hodges yellow house is abandoned however the surrounding grass has been mowed. A neighbor told us that Curtis has passed away and he is looking after his place.
5) AREA 1 - I went to the TRI-CO-HP (abt 75 yds north of road) as per the PB coordinates. An E-W line of trees is pink flagged and I believe is the Wyoming Co Line, a red and blue blazes on trees, and an old N-S Fence line (could be the McDowell/Mercer Line. Nothing is definite, I stomped the area (some dense underbrush). One thing is sure, higher ground exists to the east in Mercer Co.
AREA 2 - just beside/south of the road, all tall grass and brush. No evidence of Co Line, stomped the area and chose a spot at 37.42387,80.31143).
Impossible to eye-level the 2 areas because of the vegetaion. Unlike Michael I believe AREA 1 is the higher one the two.
From our parking spot we drove back on the road .3 miles to the right bend and a driveway on the left leading to a Communication Tower. Our TH for FLAT TOP MOUNTAIN. This whole area has been logged and is very rough. I checked out the area, choosing my HP at (37.42382,-80.30653), 40 yards right-of-north from the Tower.
From here we drove northwest to the RD Bailey Lake WMD and found a campsite (20$) for the night. On the way through Northfork we looked for a restaurant and as luck would have it ended up at "The Dinner Bucket", a miners family restaurant. An old place with all sorts of miners paraphernalia, pictures on the wall including one of President JFK when he visited a local mine, equipment and a wall for "WV Coal Miner Hall of Fame". A real cool find and a must stop for future County Highpointers.
