Ascent Trip Report

We did Upper and Lower Maidenwater the day before (amazing BTW), but alot of rain that night and threatening showers during the day kept me from our plan to do a tight slot nearby called Shenanigans. After the clouds broke I ran up Pennell instead as its on my goal of 3,000 foot Utah prominence peaks anyways. We parked at 8,000 ft and probably could have made it to the rock spire at 8868, but its pretty rocky, after that there are many downed trees, boulders a very steep bouldery section and then after the creek crossing a very rutted and eroded section before turning back to a pleasant trail, hopefully they keep this closed and it will make a nice trail for the future. Great views on top, I even spotted Six Shooter peak over in Canyonlands and Shiprock in NM. A storm was brewing on Boulder mountain and caught up to me halfway down with snow, barely got wet as a result. Did the very recommendable Holmes peak the next day. Although lower the views are more impressive and the redrock nature of the lower half is something unique.
