Ascent Trip Report

Started this hike at 5:11 PM and was down at by 7:11 PM for an exactly 2 hour hike round trip. We wanted to be down before sunset, and ended up timing it pretty well.

Going east from San Diego, turn off exit 47 onto Sunrise Highway. After 7 Miles on Sunrise Highway, turn right onto Kitchen Creek Rd. Kitchen Creek Rd is a potholed mess, but doable in a passenger car. I did it! After 1.5 Miles on Kitchen Creek road, there is a turnout with a metal gate on your right. Park in the turn off. The hike starts past the metal gate.

The first part of the hike is an easy, downhill use trail.

The second part of the hike is on a fire road. Going from the use trail to the fire road was easy, but I missed the turn on the way back cause I wasn't paying attention! There is a gate w/ barbed wire fence half way down the fire road portion of the trail. We tried to find a way around the gate, but there was barbed wire extending in both directions. We followed the barbed wire to the right side until we got blocked by un-penetrable brush and turned back to the gate. Not sure what the property deal is here, but all the prior GPS tracks and trip reports have us going under the gate.

After the gate, we got to the third part of the hike, a non-maintained single track up to the summit. On the right side of the fire road, there is a wash that indicates it's time to head up the mountain. GPS was helpful here as there is initially no distinguishable trail headed into the wash. The trail up to the summit is clearish, but heavily overgrown by tall, thick chaparral, so your shoulders and hips will take a beating fighting through. Wear long pants and long sleeves!!! 600 ft of elevation in about .4 miles for the summit push. Hard, but short. I can't see any other route to take to the summit that's thinkable without bringing a machete.

We were above clouds at the top, and could see the other Cleveland National Forest peaks popping through the cloud cover.
