Ascent Trip ReportFrom US 64 in Asheboro drove south on the Zoo Parkway, NC 159, before bearing left onto Old Cox Road. At the top of the Cox Mtn saddle I pulled into the southside access road for the Cross Road Baptist Church and drove the short distance up to the parking lot and the church. A rounded spot of the parking lot initially appears to be the high point of Cox, but right in between the church building and a picnic there is a small slice of what appears to be the original summit complete with a couple of large boulders.
If this drive up proves to be a let down, consider ascending the north summit of Cox Mountain. I walked across Old Cox Road directly across from the church access road and gently ascended around a locked gate up to the flat summit in 3 minutes time. No views on this forested north knoll.
An expansive view of Cox Mountain and the church can be had from the top of Harveys Mt. |
