Ascent Trip Report

After talking to some locals on Chirichua, I decided to take the norther approach from Carr Canyon that traverses the ridge south to Miller. They didn't think that any illegal activity made it's way up to Carr, and the ridge is supposed to be some of the best of the Arizona trail.

Anyway, the road to Ramsay Vista is well bladed, but a little rough at spots. Clearance makes it trivial, but a passenger car could very easily get up there (and I in fact did see several up there later in the day). There are signs warning that you may encounter illegal activity, but there also was a border patrol vehicle parked at the trailhead. I encountered the border patrol agent a bit later, and they regularly patrol the area.

The climb up to Carr and then over to Miller is great. The forest is healing from an old fire, stands of healthy aspens are sprouting in places. A light breeze keeps things cool and views are panoramic. I encountered no trash or any other signs that illegals or smugglers head this way. On my way down, I encountered at least a dozen locals hiking up and down Carr (and one who was traversing the ridge). Many families had small children as well. At least on a weekend, it seems like it would be extremely unlikely to have an encounter coming from the north.
