Hiked past the Dawn Mine to Brown from the east. Hiked down Brown to the west as a loop!

Hiked with a meet up group. We had plenty of breaks and enjoyed ourselves!
Sierra Club Lower Peaks list: 28/84

From Millard Campground, we'll head to Dawn Mine, the Tom Sloan Saddle, up Brown Mountain, to the Ken Burton Saddle and then return to Millard. Here are the deets:

First 3 miles: We’ll start at the Millard Canyon Campground (1,800 ft. elev.) at the north end of Chaney Trail in Altadena. We’ll hike up to Mt. Lowe Road, then onto the beautiful Sunset Ridge trail and back down into Millard Canyon, then East to Dawn Mine (3,100 ft. elev.), with much boulder hopping along the way. We’ll take a short stop to peer into the mine.

Next 1.1 miles: The next leg will take us from Dawn Mine north to Tom Sloan Saddle (4,100 ft. elev.), and is one of our “exploratory/ adventurous” segments.

Next 1.2 miles: From the Saddle we’ll head West along the ridge line, with several false peaks (up and down) and some minor boulder hopping to Brown Mountain (4,470 ft. elev.), where we’ll take a quick rest for snacks/lunch.

Next 1.3 miles: We’ll continue west down a steep ridge on an unimproved trail to the Ken Burton Saddle (2,900 ft. elev.).

The final 5.5 miles: From the Saddle, we’ll head South and back East along what used to be the Brown Mountain fire road and Fern Truck Trail via the Brown Mountain Saddle (now single track bike trails) back to Millard Campground (N.b.: this is a long, completely exposed final leg).

Level: Advanced

Gain: 3,000 ft.

Distance: ~ 12 miles

Time: 6-7+ hours (e.g. plan for the day)

Type: Loop, with some scrambling, first 4 miles to Tom Sloan Saddle is mostly shaded, but remaining 8 miles to Brown Mountain and return to Millard Campground will be completely exposed. (Current forecast is partly cloudy, but we’ll check again closer to Sat.)
