Ascent Trip ReportWOW! This route is WAY BETTER than the one from the east!
The road in is not trivial- the dirt road that goes south from Jean along the east side of the Lucy Gray Mountains is decent, but I'd still recommend high-clearance 4x4 due to deep sand in places. Where one turns east to head to Railroad Springs is where it gets "interesting". Right away the "road" gets what I considered to be impassible. Upon getting out and looking around, we found a "passable" alternative that looks like it started out as an ATV trail before rejoining the road beyond the first obstacles. The alternative, and the road beyond, is narrow in many places- usually this means a fair amount of pin-striping, but in one place there were some nasty rocks and I had a total of 1" clearance combined across both sides (in a Nissan Xterra) so I wouldn't recommend a wide vehicle. The road does get marginally better after the first mile.
We parked about 3.3 miles up this road. From there, the hike was very enjoyable on mostly good terrain, though there was a fair amount of cactus, so be careful where you choose to put your hands and feet.
Given my poor experience on the eastern approach, I'd recommend this approach even if it involved walking the entire Railroad Spring Road.
