Ascent Trip ReportClimbed Black Butte earlier in the afternoon. Because Highway 162 was un-passable at Black Butte (would have been the most direct route), had to double back and take Forest Route 24N02, which added an extra 15-20 miles, but goes to the north of 162 at a much lower elevation. The access to the peak became un-passable at about 6100 ft, 2 to 2 1/2 miles from the summit. At some spots the road had about 8 feet of snow on it. For a while I followed some type of feline tracks, (by the size either a bobcat, or juvenile mountain lion). I began getting concerned about daylight, so made the decision at about 6500 to leave the road and scramble the remainder to the peak, cutting off about 1/2 mile. The lookout was boarded up, but accessable by a small staircase. Nice views of what I assume is the Yolly Bolly range to the north and a view of the Central Valley. I could barely see Chico through my binoculars. On the way down, I followed the ridge to the south, which I had seen on the way up. Unfortunately, I descended a little far and had to ford a few streams and climb about 150 feet back up to the access road. |
