Ascent Trip ReportThe route to Harmon Knob crosses the shoulder of Loggy Ridge, so it makes sense to do them together. It took me 2.7 miles to bag both.
From Boone, take NC194 north, left on Howard's Creek Road, sharp right on Grady Winkler Road, and left on unpaved Sugarloaf Road. You'll reach a gap where Knob Hill turns right and climbs the southeast side of Loggy Ridge. However, I continued on Sugarloaf a short distance, passing a driveway on the left where the gravel ends. Just ahead is a grassy woods road on the right--this is my route.
The grassy road is a driveway to a cabin for sale atop Loggy Ridge. It would be easy to drive with high clearance, and the cable gate was open, but I don't want to risk getting locked in, so I parked on the narrow shoulder of Sugarloaf Road.
Hike 0.4 miles up the road to where it makes a switchback to the right. Leave the road and continue northeast downhill 0.3 miles to Salt Rock Gap, where there is a woods road that doesn't go to the summit. Instead, you just head uphill another 0.4 miles, climbing 440 feet. The terrain is rocky but the undergrowth was negligible when I hiked in mid-April. It would be a little harder in summer, but there are no thorns or rhododendron to deal with. The summit is nice and open, but the views are eclipsed by trees on all sides.
Follow your GPS or compass back to the switchback where you left the road. From here, it's an easy 0.3 miles to the top of Loggy Ridge, and then 0.7 miles back down to Sugarloaf Road.
