Ascent Trip Report

Day Hike separate from our annual backpacking trip. This year was to Zion National Park. Before initiating our backpacking trip and hitting the trailhead I sent the guys to this unique geologic formation just for fun. The Checkerboard Mesa is a must see when in the Park. I did not study the topo well to determine the best route up this sandstone pillowed structure and excitedly sought out to climb it on energy and enthusiasm. Once you get above the mid section, on our route the surface, although not particualy steep became very tricky because of loose sandy conditions of the pillows of sandstone. We began to slip and slide on our boots and the angle was not have any hand holds. It was just steep pillowed sand rolling on the hard pillows. We selected a poor route and had to turn back and did not reach top. Did not have time to try again. This is must go back and complete fun day hike/scramble. Began near BM 5547. Turned back at around 6300.
