Ascent Trip ReportBriefly (details to follow):
From reading multiple older posts was prepared for an 8 mile slog through dense forest with only a hint of a trail. Was pleasantly surprised to find the trail consistently well blazed and marked up to the bushwack before Plott Balsam. Even here there was enough of a trail and several sets of tags that finding the summit was not particularly difficult. The trail very steep in many places making this a strenuous ten mile hike. That said navigation is fairly straight forward and the trail in much better shape then previously described.
Followed logging road around old field top (swing to the right of this peak following a weathered sign that reads "fire escape trail") Logging road continued up until split. Due to somewhat confusing directions in older posts on this site and elsewhere I piled several large rocks at this point. From here bushwack straight up between the two roads... faint trail often visible and pink, orange and yellow tags in varying states of decay often found. Rock Cairn built at presumed summit. Bushwacking down more difficult as trail not nearly as visible and tags sparse ended up coming out on logging road to the left of where we started bushwhack with easy return. |
