Ascent Trip Report

We walked to southernmost tip of the marina, and then walked a block East on the Blvd. Paseo de Marina. Across the street from the Naval base, we spoke to a guard in a guardhouse to be let in to hike the hills. He told us to keep walking a little further down Blvd. Paseo de Marina where we let ourselves in through gate that opens up to a dirt lot with a trail leading up into the hills at the far end of the lot. There were a couple caged dogs in the lot, but they were harmless. The first third of the hike was simple on a very clear trail but then the trail ends. The next half of the hike was sort of on a trail that was barely visible, but you could occasionally see a footprint in the dirt, so someone was there before us. It was essentially off-trail though. You need to use careful and creative footing along there. The last 10% was fairly steep and risky. I'd be hesitant to bring my 10 year-old kids up there due to the assumed risk (although they'd probably do fine). The views on top at the crucifix are spectacular. 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. The hike down is a little trickier than the hike up. There's a lot of loose gravel and steep declines. In a few places you may need to hike down backwards and use your hands to steady yourself down. Nothing too terribly difficult though. The whole hike round trip from the base where we entered the gate took less than an hour.
