Ascent Trip Report

A very enjoyable exploration to find the famous park's HP. Unfortunately they had the actual peak fenced off with signs saying they were re-vegetating the grass for the season and to stay out. So I had to look at the actual bump from outside the fence for now. My hike was excellent. I would have never guessed you could find steep rock to hike and even a small area for some minor scrambling in Central Park but the north end of the park is very hilly with exposed rock ridges. Apparently these rock ridges down near the Harlem Meer were strategic overlooks during the American Revolutionary War and there was fort built on one of the nearby hills east of the true HP.

I got off the Blue Subway Line C at 103rd Street. I then, went into the park at the large entrance and immediately headed down-slope to make a more suitable trail-head for the up-hike.The nearby small pond to the south is around elevation 50 so I kept heading over hills and across valleys and soaked up this lovely park until I reached the Conservatory Garden to the far east. I then headed down more until I found the Harlem Meer a really nice lake with nice views. Climbing up the steep ridge to where Fort Clinton was located. There is a nice little rock formation down to the Meer. Fort Fish was the NW on an adjacent hill.

I eventually meandered my way over every fun hill and rock formation I could find until it was getting dark and it was time to get back to the train. I did not get the HP this time but I will come back and get it perhaps in the summer when the grass is strong again and they take the fence down. Also collected tree leaves of shingle oak and swamp white oak
