Ascent Trip Report

Second day of touring old San Juan only today, we hiked every street several times and both forts and all the steps in the forts and the national historic trail along the water (below the walls) and above the walls and then back up to the highpoint that I located the day before. Before we left San Juan and flew home we had nearly 25,000 steps on the pedometer and over 75 flight of stairs so a good exercise day in the sun of PR with a stiff breeze in your face all day. The forts are both very interesting and they stand about 120 to 140 feet above sea level. They are as many as 6 levels above ground so in places the forts stand taller than the HP of the isleta, but the best I can tell from researching the internet, the historic and true highpoint of the small island is in the vicinity of where shown. There is so much cutting of the existing land with retaining walls to form parking lots, streets, and buildings, I suspect there has been some tampering but the overall top of the island appears by all USGS mapping and flood mapping to be at the top of Calle De La Cruz and Calle Justo along the northern boulevard.

So instead of simply walking up to the HP, we made the TH the port and then explored the city, touched the HP, explored both fortifications thoroughly, and walked the national trail along the water and all walls. Of course, there was some shopping and eating along the way.
