Ascent Trip ReportLast HP on the way back from this 6000 mile, 6 HP (NJ, MS, AL, FL, LA, AR), 9 day, 9 brewery, whirlwind of a drive. All points toward Maine now.
Arkansas is surprisingly beautiful, I would love to come back and explore its natural areas a little more. The Ozarks/Ouachitas stand out quite dramatically on an otherwise flat landscape, and Arkansas seems to put a good chunk of money into supporting their tourism industry (which a lot of states/provinces could learn from!), so I was pleasantly shocked with my brief Arkansas experience.
Anyway, parked at the large lodge (which had beautiful views of lower-land Arkansas) and picked up the trail across the road. It wandered through the winter/spring deciduous for about 3/4 mile before arriving at the summit, which affords no awesome views but makes up for an incredibly cool to-scale model of Arkansas, complete with summit marker in the spot where Magazine Mountain is, and separations based on the different geographical zones of the state. A little busier up here than some of the smaller HP's I've been to (there are a couple trails up) so only stayed around for 15 minutes to do the usual business of pictures and register, then headed back to the lodge to try and get a decent picture of the valley below. Then, it was time to go home (which is New Brunswick, Can - just East of Maine - which we had 2, now 1 and a half, days to do).
