Ascent Trip Report

Based on a recommendation from the internet, saying there is little hiking on the island, we parked in the sandy parking area at the point off of Barrio Esperanza on the south side of the island. The route was recommended as having a good entrance across the Ensenada Sombe. At higher currents and tides, I suppose this is a separated key, but unlike Cayo de Afuera to the West, this one does not require a swim. We had a lower tide, and walked easily across the isthmus so it was a peninsula today. The maps show it as a distinct key (island) and it may be but not at low tide. The island is not flat topped so the 70 foot estimate of the elevation is likely pretty close as it does rise above the 20 meter (65 foot contour).

There were a about 5 other groups exploring today so this hike gets some attention. There are a number of places to take nice photos of the bays, and of the impressive cliffs off the south coast of Cayo de Afuera which is a bit more impressive. Tons of large lizards run across the path as you walk up the steep ancient coral rock to the summit and there are some nice photo opportunities. The path is marked with red tape.

We had heard there is a trail down the east cliff and back and we found it and took it to within 15 feet of the rocks/ocean below and lost the trail. It was not marked and was not used or has been abandoned. We ended up hiking back up to the summit and returning the way we came so we obtained extra gain. rip was about a mile each way.
