Ascent Trip Report

Approximately 352 miles and 6+ hour drive from Taum Sauk Mountain, MO. We arrived after midnight. When we started driving from Taum Sauk Mountain my oldest son and I didn't exactly feel well. We both felt "car sick" and attributed it to driving 700+ miles through Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, back through Indiana, Illinois and then Missouri. The dark, narrow, up and down classically Ozark type roads exiting the area did not help. However, after 50-55 minutes of driving we stopped for a late dinner and some fuel. The longer than normal pit stop served its purpose and feeling much better I drove the remaining distance to Mt. Magazine-Signal Hill.

As we approached in the dark we marveled again at the significant differerence between the "relatively flat Midwest rural areas of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois" and the "angry crags" butting up in Missouri and Arkansas. The Cameron Bluff Campground was full when we arrived. So, we pitched our bags in the truck bed and slept under the stars. We awoke shortly after sunrise, dressed and hiked for about 15-20 minutes covering roughly 3/4 mile on the well maintained trail. The "High Point" has a large stone marker in the shape of the state of Arkansas. After pictures, registering and generally checking out the area we headed back down through the woods on less traveled trails. No real vista from the summit; but, after a short descent there are lots of places with scenic overlooks of the area.

After our descent we had a MRE for breakfast on the porch of one of the cabins. It was a windy but the view was beautiful. We checked out the Mt. Magazine Lodge, Rock Climbing and Hang Climbing Points and the Visitor Center. Even in early March you can see how this is an attractive multi-use outdoor recreation area. Interesting history on each of the four "High Points" we have visited in the past 30 hours (Campbell Hill, Hoosier Hill and Taum Sauk Mountain and Signal Hill).
