Ascent Trip Report

After skiing Sunlight today with Artski, Jennifer, Annie, and Doug, Katrina and I stopped at Red Hill on the way back because we couldn't resist getting in a hike on our ski trip before heading home to Iowa. It was the early evening and we both just wore our under layers from skiing. The parking lot was 3/4 full, but clearing out. We decided to go up about the same way as last time we were here: Three Poles to Mushroom Rock. It's the steepest and probably fastest way up. We passed a few ladies on the early part of the trail where it was a bit icy and muddy, but then were passed by a huffing and puffing old mountain biker who had to walk it up a few feet in that icy spot. Most of the rest of the trail was dry and we worked our way up to the familiar summit. The sun was gone behind clouds and the mountains that we had just skied to the west. Sopris was looking good as always. We wanted to take the Blue Ribbon trail down, but we disagreed upon where it would start from the top. We started walking north, but then backtracked to the summit and went straight south instead of getting close to the red cliffs. Our trail got easier and easier to follow, and at some point we turned around and saw that the sign read Blue Ribbon for where we had just been. We were surprised, but also happy because it was getting dark and we wanted to get down as quickly as possible. We made it back to the car and to Annie's house in the twilight after a great evening hike on a great hill.

I also had to deal with no pockets for the first time on such a hike and so I hooked my key ring onto my shoe laces which worked well enough.
