Ascent Trip Report

Drive up with a short walk .... 1 mile, 40 minutes RT.

From I-40, exit 329, we went south on Market street .2 miles to a right turn/followed by an immediate left onto Bat Town Road (paved), 1.4 miles south at a 4-WAY JCT we went left on Owl Roost Road (signs points the way "Cumberland Trail State Park"). This good paved road climbs/winds (southeast then west) 2.5 miles to a large parking lot at a Communication Tower before the summit. This was my TH.
We were pleasantly surprised to find this a paved road, we had fears of another Hinch experience.

I hiked a paved road (trail on return) west to the summit at less than half a mile, capped with a fenced-in "FAA Air Traffic Control Facility". The high ground is north of the Facility, with a BM 20 yards inside the woods, "USGS BLACK 1934"

The west side and south side of the summit has outstanding huge rock ledges, well worth exploring. Marked trails lead to the different lookouts. A number of hikers on the trails. A great destination.

We were lucky to overnight at Rockwood, TN. For the second time in our travels we were entertained by a group of local musicians. We went to out usual WiFi spot, McDonalds, and as we were about to leave a group of local musicians came in for their weekly Wednesday night gig. So we stuck around to hear some beautiful classical country music. The place was packed with people .... for us this was a very special happening.
We first came upon a similar happening years back at Bristol, TN. We went into a local Barber Shop, as I need a hair cut, and found a local group playing/singing country music, something they did on a weekly basis. Beautiful stuff.
