Ascent Trip ReportAttempted Mt. Mitchell the night before from the Black Mountain Campground, but ran out of daylight and turned around. After spending the night in Marion, NC, I was going to drive up to attain the peak, but the road was still closed due to snow? I'm guessing. I drove from Texas and already had 3 other highpoints down, with plans for 2 more, so I wasn't just going to leave it. I parked at the Black Mountain Campground again and set off on the same trail from the previous night. Very well marked trail. Damn the roots though, caught my toe on them a handful of times. Had to put my hands down in a few places due to mud. Snow and Ice in several places near the top. The ice was in the process of melting, so it was very slick in some places (makes me glad I turned around the night before.) Met a fellow HPer at the summit. He was coming in from New Jersey. I took a long rest at the top got some great pictures before heading back down. Dipped my feet into the ice cold river at the bottom that runs along the campground. Felt very accomplished especially after turning it down previously.
