Ascent Trip ReportPinnacle Mountain is located in a state park so you will not have any access issues, but the area does close 30 minutes after sunset, so you can't enjoy a sunset on the summit or your car will probably be locked in the park for the night. Pinnacle Mountain has a volcanic conical shape and it looks like a difficult climb. The West Summit Trail, however, has had a great amount of work done and even the bouldering route has large well placed rocks that provide convenient steps on the higher portions of the mountain. The higher you climb the steeper the grade. From the parking lot it is only .44 air miles to the summit, but the West Summit Trail is actually .75 miles long. It took my son, Marshall, and I 35 minutes to make the ascent, but we did quite a bit of photography during the climb. There are two summits on Pinnacle Mountain. The higher 1011-foot south summit and the slightly lower north summit which actually has better views, especially of Lake Maumelle to the NW. Even though it was a weekday, there were a lot of people climbing when we were there. It is very popular. The weekend crowds probably get quite thick. This is a "must do" climb if you are ever in the area. |
