Ascent Trip Report

Walton FL – Britton Hill
1 large area – beyond county park monument
Beckie & Dave Covill

As has been heavily discussed at COHP Yahoo lately, this highpoint needs more than just a monument touch & go. I brought my Garmin 62S GPS, and my trusty 5X level. It became immediately apparent that by walking in the woods either directly S, or on the paths to the SE, you were going uphill several feet at least.

I got a reading of about 352’ with the GPS belt high at the monument. 10’ accuracy was noted on it. I held it above my head, and it went up 3’. Held it at the ground, and it went down 3-4’. Cool…… We toured all the paths in there. Quite a network has been built. There are two HP Foundation benches at various spots along it, and one ancient red metal bench, at the junction of the perimeter trail, and the best cut through path. The HPF plastic benches are green and moldy, and next visitor please bring a brush and some solution to clean them with. I brought a plastic jar register (nuts from Costco) and left it at what I determined to be the highest ground. The perimeter trail seems to go around the high ground completely. It is about a half mile long or so. As we walked the interior minor paths, I got readings of up to 358’, and wandered in the woods twenty feet to a spot that seemed to steady at 359’, or about 7’ higher than at the monument. I left the register here, head high, in the crotch of a twin tree trunk. Clearly visible. Please move it if you can establish a higher spot !

We walked back to the monument, and again got a reading of 352’. I am pretty satisfied that we walked across highest ground, although it is very flat in there.
