Ascent Trip ReportUsing LiDAR-derived elevations on the NCOneMap website, we narrowed the the Rockingham COHP possibilities to two points on Garrett Road east of Stoneville and one point on Victor Hill Church Road north of Ayersville near the Stokes County line.
The two points on Garrett Road are COHP Areas 14 and 15. There are three houses along the ridgeline at Area 14 and the HP is in the side yard of the easternmost house, 3138 Garrett Road, N36.52959 W79.88733 (NAD27). Nobody was home when we visited. Area 15 has a communications tower that is unposted and has a walk-around gate. NCOneMap lists these spots as 1066 and 1064, respectively. However, the datasheet for the tower (#1056465) indicates the base is 1042. We thought Areas 14 and 15 were too close to say which is higher. Both have nice views to the south.
None of the other four areas east of Stoneville was above 1050. Any natural hills at the sawmill have been leveled.
Among the nine western candidates, Area 3 is listed at 1060 on NCOneMap. The next highest is Area 5 at 1052. The others are less than 1050, so we ruled them out and did not visit. Area 3 is in an open field a few yards south of Victor Hill Church Road and within sight of the sign for the Stokes County line. My GPS had it N36.48749 W80.02840 (NAD27).
