Ascent Trip ReportThe snow-white sand dunes behind the Woods' farm were a treat. I went to ask permission from Effy Wood (2395 Wintergreen Road, Cove City NC) but no one was home when I arrived in late afternoon. I drove out the dirt road to the dunes area and met a worker leaving, who gave me permission to hike. The land has been planted in pines but the tops are still clear. I thought the westernmost dune (N35.23033 W77.33598, NAD27) was highest. The Craven County GIS site (http://gis.cravencountync.gov/maps/map.htm) has 2-foot contours and shows two 66-foot contours here that correspond to the 20-meter contours on the quad.
Area 4 is a slight ridge that parallels US70 near the town of Dover. Craven GIS says this tops out in the 64-foot contour. A fence north of the highway could make this a challenge to visit, but I found a spot to cross where a fallen tree had breached the fence.
