Ascent Trip ReportMy wife and I hiked Rabun Bald, Flint Knob, and Alex Mountain all today for a 10+ mile loop hike. From the summit of Rabun Bald, I hiked south, descending, on the yellow blazed Bartram trail. About a mile after Rabun Bald, I reached a side trail to the right marked with a sign referencing Alex Mountain. I've seen this trail called the Alex Mountain trail and turnoff is marked as Flint Gap on some maps. This trail looks like it is very rarely used. Researching, I found that it would be blue or red blazed and I saw old evidence of both. It looks like someone has recently blazed it with orange plates nailed to trees (at least up and over Flint Knob). Ascending from the Bartram trail, I reached a high point (called Flint Knob East here) and then made a short descent and ascent to Flint Knob. There are some interesting rock formations just off the trail. I also found a red pipe embedded in stone. I'm not sure where the exact high point is but I covered as much area as I could on top. From Flint Knob, I continued on the orange blazed Alex Mountain Trail to Alex Mountain (described in the trip reports for that peak).
