Ascent Trip ReportToday was unbelievable, it was sunny and the temps reached the mid 50's, you would think it was late spring!!! I hiked N Dome & Sherrill with 2 friends of mine. We spotted a car at the lot on Route 42, near Spruce Rd, and began our hike from the Spruceton TH. We hiked the red trail up for a bit, there were some icy spots but we managed. When we needed to go off trail and cross the creek, we needed to put our microspikes on and kept them on until the final descent.
This was my first real bushwack, it was fun but I'm glad I did it in the winter, there are tons of nettles! The trail to the top is a series of steep inclines followed by a flat to slight gain section. We made it through 2 sets of cliffs and picked up a herd path at the top to the canister.
After signing in, we followed a herd path that led us most of the way. We would up a little to the left of the land bridge so we made the adjustment to cross that. From there, we picked up the herd path again and we were able to follow that to the summit.
The descent took us longer than we expected. As it was on the west side of the mountain, there wasn't any ice or snow on this day. The descent steers you to the left and we would up having to correct to get back on track, this took us an extra 30 minutes. There was another creek to cross before making it back to the car.
I enjoyed the ascent of both peaks (except for the nettles!) but wasn't a fan of the descent. I think I prefer paths vs bushwacks but it was a great experience with a couple of good friends.
