Ascent Trip Report

Pender has the highest elevation of any of the 18 sea-level counties in NC.

From Slocum Trail SW of the town of Atkinson, the approach road is marked by a sign for New Zion AME Cemetery. We drove to the cemetery, parked at the yellow gate, and followed the dirt road 1.5 miles to the easy-to-find high points on opposite sides of the road. We couldn't tell which one was higher. The round trip was 3.44 pleasant miles through a pine plantation. Logging is underway on adjacent tracts, so the landscape could change dramatically.

You may want to explore the road to the left of the cemetery and then take the next right to join the track to the summit. If that way is not gated, you could drive within 100 yards of the COHP.
