Ascent Trip ReportBertie County has 2-foot contours on its GIS site, which we used to narrow the possibilities.
Areas 4 and 6 are in 102-foot contours off Baker Road along the county line. There is also a 100 contour at Area 5. The other six are no more than 98 feet.
From the town of Roxabel, take Tyler School Road north. (If you are coming from Kelford, this road is signed as A.C. Smith Road). Turn left onto Baker Road and see the cemetery in the field on the right. This is Area 4 and has a 102 contour, but it didn't seem to rise appreciably from the field.
Continue north on Baker Road as it crosses into Northampton County. At a sharp left, look for Dunning Lane on the right. This unpaved road crosses back into Bertie County in a 102 contour as it passes an old homestead on the left. We were looking for a large farmhouse that was shown on the aerial photos, but it has burned, and all that's left is a pile of bricks and two old trees next to the road. The roots of these trees are probably the HP. Area 5 is across a field to the south and does not rise appreciably.
There is a slight ridge at Areas 1-2-3 north of Kelford near an old railroad cut. These areas are accessible via a gated but unposted grass road from 204 North Main Street. The county GIS shows this tops out at 98 feet.
