Ascent Trip ReportHertford County now has 2-foot contour maps on its GIS website, which we used to narrow the possibilities.
Area 17: The land circled by Jay Trail appears to be a strong contender for the HP. We checked several locations, including the cemetery at Meherrin Church and Revelle Park, and concluded that the highest was a vacant wooded lot at 416 Truitt Lane, Murfreesboro. This is in a 96-foot contour according to the Hertford GIS map.
New Area on NC11 South: There is a definite hill hidden in the brush west of NC11 across from the intersection with Collin Road. It was clear-cut when Peter Barr and Shannon Dillmore "discovered" it in 2009 but is now overgrown. We parked south of Collin Road on the west side of NC11 where a gated but unposted hunters road leads into the land. From here, we bushwhacked northeast across the high ground. We saw no reason to doubt that it is natural, and it does rise several feet. NCOneMap showed a 100-ft spot elevation here, though the Hertford GIS site shows it tops out in the 96 contour.
Area 11: This area is misplaced on the Peakbagger map and is located at 130 Lewistown Road. Hertford GIS shows a 96 contour south of the road.
We also visited Areas 1 and 3, which were both 94 conturs on the county map, but found no noticeable rise there. Areas 6, 7 and 10 also have 94 contours but appear visually lower than the "new" hill nearby. We ruled out the other spots, which topped out in the 92 contour.
